If you were at the big event this weekend, you know that the new auditorium is a lovely space of acoustical marvels and subtle aesthetic flourishes. It’s also pretty green. Sustainable initiatives include:
- Insulation in roof of auditorium
- Energy efficient HVAC
- LED lighting
- Low or no VOC in any materials
- Reuse / repurpose of existing building
The last part about reuse and repurposing an existing building might seem small, but it has a HUGE effect on the environmental footprint of the new auditorium space. Preserving an existing structure means not using brand new materials that have to be fabricated and transported to the site, and not destroying the shell of the building means that shell doesn’t end up in a landfill. Even better, we get what feels like a delightfully new space inside AND one that fits into our existing campus’s stone aesthetic. Something new, something old, something green and something bold–and what’s boldest (sustainability-wise, anyway) about the “new” space is that parts of it aren’t new. Buildings: reuse ’em if you’ve got ’em!
